Ibobi tables land for sports varsity

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has categorically informed Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal that the State Government has acquired 333 acres for establishment of a National Sports University in the State.
During a meeting with the visiting Union Minister at his office this morning, Ibobi stated that the State Government has completed necessary procedures to hand over a total of 450 acres within a week taking into consideration the likely need for expansion of the university compound in future.
Stating that he came here to collect a first hand account about establishment of the university, Sarbananda Sonowal hailed the Chief Minister for providing necessary land for the sports university.
Ibobi maintained that Manipur earned the National Sports University through consistent spectacular perfor- mances of its players.
Sarbananda Sonowal informed Ibobi that the Union Sports Ministry's Joint Secretary was scheduled to arrive here today but the trip has been cancelled as the Joint Secretary got unwell.
Nonetheless, the Union Minister assured that he would send the Joint Secretary to Imphal as soon as possible in order to consult the State Government about construction of the sports university.
Top ranking Government officials were also present at the meeting.
Notably, the State Government has been consi- dering to commence the maiden session of the sports university at Khuman Lam-pak Sports Complex from the month of June until the sports university is fully constructed.
Meanwhile, after the Governor has given his consent to establishment of Manipur University of Culture, a core committee would be constituted to study the feasibility of commencing the university's maiden session within the current year.
