Imphal, January 09 2011:
A bid to hijack a brand new Tata Magic at Taphou area on NH 39 was foiled today by troops of Assam Rifles.
Reports said that troops of 5 AR recovered the vehicle near a village at Taphou where the hijackers had apparently abandoned it.
The new brand vehicle was among 10 vehicles belonging to GMT Company heading towards Imphal from Guwahati on NH 39 with security escort from Mao gate.
The report said that two of the 10 vehicles trailed behind.
Near Taphou village, three gunmen stopped the vehicles.
One dodged past but the vehicle in the rear driven by one T Romesh (30) son of Ibochouba of Lamlai Mayai Leikai could not evade the gunmen.
The AR receiving the information, immediately swung into action by launching a search operation in the nearby areas.
They found the vehicle abandoned by the hijackers near a village at 2.45 pm and handed it over to the driver who proceeded towards Imphal thereafter, a PIB statement added.
This was the third such incident in the recent past in which 5 AR have successfully thwarted attempts to hijack vehicles on NH 39, the statement claimed.
