Imphal, January 09 2011:
Each district in the state will have a special court to check food adulteration and to punish the accused.
Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao, a food safety officer of the state Health Department said that businessmen are selling food products by adding substances which are harmful to health and may even be fatal.
State Food Safety Department is taking up measures under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954 and Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules 1955.It is for this reason that special courts to deal with food adulteration cases will be set up in all districts.
He further said that many shops in the state sell adulterated food.
Tinned fish, Lactogen and flour topped the list of adulterated items.
Canned fish which contains fish head is adulterated.
If a child develops diarrhoea after consuming Lactogen, it is highly possible that it was adulterated.
Adulterated Lactogen can lead to disorders in the metabolism of the baby.
Even flour which people use for making "bora" is mixed with Kachhari Dal which adversely effect the human brain.
It may be mentioned that Kachhari Dal was banned by the state government.
He also said that some beverages without the green logo are being sold in some shops.
This is harmful to the human body.
Most adulterated foods develop side-effects slowly.
He appealed people to check the date of manufacture and expiry date before buying a product.
He said when in doubt people should inform the food safety officer in the State Medical Directorate.
