Negligible water supply in 48 Zeliangrong villages

The Zeliangrong Students Union (ZSU) in a press meet alleged the state government and local MLAs are not taking up any proper developmental works in Zeliangrong villages in Senapati district.
Speaking in the press meet on Saturday, spokesman Stephen Makuimai said that the union on a tour ahead of Christmas found developmental works in the Zeliangrong villages incomplete and abandoned by the authority.
There are water supply schemes in only 10 villages out of a total of 48 villages.
People of 38 villages depend on rivulets for potable water.
He said that construction of a water supply scheme in Thonglang village for which a work order was given in 2007 is yet to begin.
Besides, there is not a single hospital or health centre in the 48 villages.
There was one PHSC at Thonglang village which became non-functional from 1994.Security personnel are now using the building.
Stephen said that new construction of roads and black topping of roads stopped after contractors withdrew their bills.
Construction of a 18 km new road to connect Senapati and Thonglang stopped after completion of 10 km.
On enquiry, it was found that the concerned contractor had withdrawn the bill amount of the work.
He said that black topping of the 51 km long stretch from Chalwa to Kangpokpi began in 2007 but stopped after only half of the work was done.
They enquired about the work through RTI, but there is no response from the government's side till now.
Stephen said that the villages are in a pitiable situation in the field of education too.
The school building of Thonglang Junior High School which has more than 100 students is in a shabby condition.
The Kanem UJB School does not even have a building.
