Imphal, January 07 2011:
With an aim to provide good and cheap poultry feeds to the farmers, the Central Agriculture University (CAU) will plant maize all over the state.
In an interview with Hueiyen Lanpao, Professor JM Laishram, Research Co-ordinator CAU said that the university will be planting saplings of the local variety of maize throughout the state to help produce poultry and other farm feeds.
Manipur's maize variety which is yellowish in colour is high in protein content.
Around 200 metric tonnes of maize seeds will be distributed throughout the state ahead of the summer cultivation season.
This will prevent poultry farmers from spending around '10 crores in a year buying imported feeds.
JM Laishram also added that projects like North East Vision 2020 and Trans Asian Highway will boost this project of the university.
Bangkok has already demanded maize seeds and maize stems from the state with the proposal of the Trans Asian Highway .which will run through Manipur.
They are demanding the maize seeds for producing poultry feeds and the stems to extract alcohol to be mixed in petrol.
Brazil is a pioneer in mixing alcohol in petrol to save petroleum products from depletion.
