Imphal, April 20 2012:
With the number of female students enrolled in post-graduate courses of Manipur University higher than the number of male students, the status of women in our society has risen, exclaimed Prof H Nandakumar, VC, Manipur University.
He was speaking as Chief Guest of the inaugural function of the 2-day National Seminar on Social Exclusion and Inclusion Development in the North East organized by Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP), Manipur University, held at the Lecture Hall, Economics Department, today.
Prof Nandakumar pointed out that rate of female students enrollment in the Post Graduate courses of Manipur University is 51percent while that of male students is 49 percent.
This higher percentage of females enrolled in higher studies in the state clearly indicates the rising status of women in Manipuri society.
He further pointed out that there is a vast difference in the living standard of the people in urban and that of the rural areas.
This gap should be reduced at the lowest level so as to bring about an equal development in the society.
There are also lots of hurdles in the development and economic growth of the people of the North East, more particularly in the case of schedule tribes, schedule casts and the religious minorities of Manipur.
We should all come together to remove these hurdles.
A book entitled "Social Exclusion and Inclusive Development in North East", volume I was also released by the Chief Guest.
Presided over by Prof L Tomba, Director, CSSEIP, MU, the inaugural function of the workshop was also attended by Prof Amar Yum,nam, Dean, School of Social Sciences, MU and Prof Xaxa Virginius, member, Advisory Committee, CSSEIP, MU as Guests of Honour.
