Imphal, July 07 2009:
The higher authority of the Manipur Police Department is not going to spare even its own men from scanning to search for any tell-tale sign of nexus with any underground elements.
The state police department is understood to have started re-verifying its own personnel of different ranks serving in various units including Manipur Rifles and IRB.
The need for conducting personal verification of the state police and security personnel arose from the fact that despite the state government's relentless efforts to curb militant activities like extortion, intimidation and attacks on government officials and individuals, the authority has not been able to do so even in Imphal city areas where armed security personnel are being deployed in every nook and corner of the city, a highly placed police source said.
The source told the Huiyen Lanpao that not only the government but also the general public feel doubt of involvement of security men in carrying out the extortion, the source maintained.
State chief minister, O Ibobi Singh has also said in the house of the state Assembly Monday that many undergrounds residing among the common people are maintaining nexus with the security forces and causing problems in maintaining law and order.
Sources said that police have registered as many as seven cases in the recent time which state security personnel involved in the killing and threatening of people in connection with extortion demands.
Mention may be made that among other cases, state security men were detained in connection with the killing of profess of the Manipur University, Md Islamuddin on May 25 last, attack on an oil filling station at Sagolband, taking away of weapon after killing a sentry in the Imphal east district headquarters.
The one by one verification of police and state security personnel was taken up following an order of the state DGP, Y Joykumar on Saturday last.
The verification in three phases will be completed within a month period, the source said.
The verification aimed at singling out cadres of militants if any of them joined in the state force or nexus with the militants.
The verification will be conducted to personnel of all ranks in the state police and security force establishments as per the order, the source disclosed.
Verification to the armed and civil police personnel from constable to inspectors in the state police headquarter, districts police headquarters and police stations have started as a first phase, the source said adding that this phase will be completed within the next 10 days.
In the second phase, Manipur Rifles and IRB personnel in all the unit station across the state from follower to havildar will be conducted.
