Jiribam, July 07 2009:
The Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Jiribam is on the verge of collapse and its existence is almost forgotten by the people of the sub-division today.
What could be the worst fate for an Institute when not a single student has enrolled for the academic session 2009-10 till date even though the last date of admission is due to be over soon.
During a recent inspection at the ITI office which is being housed in a rented building at Babupara, this correspondent witnessed apart from the signboard, one non-functional black and white TV set, some furniture, four outdated and non-functional typewriters.
The Institute has been existing just in namesake withonly two employees, one instructor of stenographer and the other a chowkidar.
It was learnt that the wireman has not returned from his place at Imphal after he left long time back.
As per the rule, 16 students are required for a stream in ITI.
But in the Jiri the Institute has failed to attract the required number of students till date.
Instructor of Stenographer identified as U Chandramani stated lack of adequate staff is hampering the functioning of the Institute and thus losing its credibility.
According to him, as per requirements, at least one workshop calculation and science instructor, one engineering drawing instructor and one Drawing & Disbursing Officer (DDO) are needed for the Institute to run efficiently.
In the absence of DDO, Chandramani said, he and the chowkidar are compelled to withdraw their salary from Imphal.
He also noted that there is a tendency among the sub-ordinate employees to take their job for granted in the absence of DDO in any ITIs of the State and the same is true about the ITI at Jiri.
Chandramani disclosed that not a single student has been enrolled at ITI Jiri for the academic session 2009-10 even though the last date of admission is due to be over soon.
On social activist of Jiri suggested that instead of fooling the people of Jiribam it would be wiser on the part of the authority concerned to abolish the Institute which is existing only in namesake and does not serve the purpose.
