Two detained in mopping ops

Imphal, August 31 2010:
Unidentified underground elements triggered a bomb at the house of a retired superintendent of Taxation late in the evening today, injuring three persons including the retired official.
The bomb hurled at the house of the retired superintendent of Taxation at Chingmeirong under Lamphel Police Station went off at about 6.45 pm.
In the blast, the 62-year old retired superintendent, Wangkhem Modhumangol along with two persons identified as Laishram Deben (55) of Ngairangbam and Khuraijam Tiken (40) of Waikhong, presently residing at the rented house of the former superintendent, sustained splinter injuries.
Modumangol sustained injuries in legs, right arm and wrist, Tiken in the right hand and backside of the body while Deben received injuries at the right leg and back.
The bomb hurled by suspected undergrounds exploded at the front courtyard of the house where Modumangol was refreshing himself while Tiken and Deben were coming back after works of the day.
A team of Lamphel Police led by the OC, Ingocha rushed to the spot and investigated into the incident.
However, they are yet to ascertain the motive behind the bomb attack even though it was suspected to have been related with extortion demand to the former superintendent.
The bomb attack at the house of the former superintendent was amidst the tight up security measures taken up in Imphal area to check underground activists and their overground workers taking shelter in the rented houses in the wake of threats on the life of the non-Manipuris.
After the mopping operation at Khurai area, Imphal West Police also conducted a cordon search operations from Keishampat Thiyam Leikai to Keishampat Leimajam Leikai under Imphal Police Station.
SDPO, Imphal west district police, Ibomcha personally supervised the mopping operation in which two persons including a woman among 32 picked up for verifications were detained by the police.
Police commandos cordoned off the localities from around 3.30 am and conducted verifications to over 1000 people of age ranging from 15 to 50 years after calling out from their respective houses.
The verifications that lasted till around 6.30 pm, altogether 32 individuals were picked up and brought to Imphal Police Station for further verifications.
Police later said that two out of the 32 have been detained by them for further verifications.
In the meantime, a team of Thoubal police commandos conducting frisking and checking operations at Yairipok area yesterday apprehended two activists of PREPAK including a woman.
They were identified as Pukhrambam Nanao alias Molikul alias Abung (27) son of P Ibungobi of Thingangphai village of Churachandpur district and Nongthonbam Shanti (38) wife of N Mani of Phairenbam Mamang Leikai.
A 9 mm pistol loaded with six live rounds of ammunition was recovered from them, a statement of the Senior SP, Thoubal district police said today.
Troops of 31 Assam Rifles also apprehended an overground worker of the PREPAK identified as Inao Meetei (27) son of late Ibobi of Moreh ward no.7 during a search operation in Moreh town yesterday.
He was handed over to the Imphal Police Station, a report said.
