ECI advises State Govt for full-time SPs

In view of the forthcoming Manipur Legislative Assembly elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked the State Government to appoint full-time Superintendents of Police for Imphal West, Imphal East, Churachandpur and Tamenglong districts.
ECI Secretary Anuj Jaipuriar sent a letter to the Manipur Chief Secretary today directing the latter to appoint full-time SPs for Imphal West, Imphal East, Churachandpur and Tamenglong districts in place of the present 'in-charge' or 'look after' SPs, conveyed an official source.
The letter further directed the State Government to compile a panel list of the police officers eligible to be full-time SPs of these districts and send the same to the ECI within 24 hours.
At present, DIG (Range I) L Kailun has been working as 'look after' SP of Imphal West district while Additional SP Dr AK Jhaljit is 'look after' SP of Imphal East district.
Likewise, in Churachandpur and Tamenglong districts too, Additional SPs Rajen and P Polianmang have been working as 'look after' SPs.
Income Tax officials detailed for overlooking poll-related expenditures of the forthcoming elections have been activated.
Moreover, air intelligence units have been opened and activated at Tulihal, Guwahati and Silchar airports.
In connection with the Assembly elections, a meeting of the coordination committee would be held at 4 pm tomorrow with the Chief Secretary in the chair.
The Election Commission today organised a video conference with District Election Officers and discussed the forthcoming elections, said the source.
It is reported that a full team of the ECI led by Chief Election Commissioner Dr SY Quraisi may arrive at Imphal on January 5 .
The team may also convene a meeting with the Chief Secretaries and DGPs of Assam, Nagaland and Mizoram at Imphal.
