More than one lakh people of different communities made a joint pledge to safeguard the territorial integrity and work for communal harmony during a huge public meeting at Manipur Public School ground today.
The meeting was organized by the North Imphal United Clubs and Meira Paibis Organization (NIUCAMPO) and AMSU northern branch under the aegis of the United Committee Manipur (UCM).
Members of Meitei, Kuki, Liangmei, Kabui, Nepali, Muslim, Mao and Paomai communities from Wangkhei, Heingang, Lamsang, Saitu, Saikul, Sekmai and Kangpokpi attended the meet.
The congregation unanimously decided to press the Centre to revoke the Centre's decision, to uphold communal harmony amongst the various communities and also to work unitedly on any public issue.
Chungkham Haokip, president All Manipur Kuki Inpi, Thambou Kabui, chief of Koirengei Kabui village and Hussain Chaudhury, advisor All Manipur Muslim (Pangal) Welfare Assn were the chief guest, guest of honour and the president.
AMUCO president Ito Tongbram termed the Bangkok agreement as ambiguous and said it reflects many interpretation which might break up the State.
The Centre has been defeated in its own game as no communal tension has occurred till date.
However, everybody should be cautious in the agitation and not provoke communal tension.
The Motbung Area Chief Organization leader Satkho expressed full support of the Kukis in any movement to save the State territory.
Naharolgi Thoudang editor and AMWJU president N Biren appealed to the Naga leaders and NSCN (IM) to realize that both hill and valley peoples are brothers.
He also refuted the report that more than 2000 Naga leaders have fled the valley.
AMUCO chief advisor Th Iboyaima, Dr Dhanabir Laishram, Ng Nongyai, ex-president AMSU, N Sorojini are among others who spoke at the occasion.
The United Struggle Committee for Territorial Integrity of Manipur, Nambol organized a meeting at Nambol Kongkham yesterday.
Other meetings were also organized by the United Clubs Organization, Patsoi Kendra, Youths Sacrifice Club, Bramhapur Nahabam, United Communities Organization, Lamphel Area, Ningthoukhong Mamang Leikai Youth Welfare Club, Rebuild India Forum, All Manipur Entrepreneurs Association Takyel, Youth Social Club cum Information Centre Ayang Palli Road at their respective areas.
Meanwhile, the Vaiphei leaders of Manipur today held a meeting at New Lambulane and Formed the Vaiphei Tribe Union, Manipur.
K Thanga Vaiphei and Lamninlian Vaiphei have been elected chairman and secretary.
The meeting resolved to work for safeguarding tile State territory at any cost.
