CM inspects sewerage treatment plant

Imphal, March 21 2021:
Chief Minister N Biren Singh inspected the Sewerage Treatment Plant of Nambul River which is under construction at Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai today.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Forest and Environment Minister Awangbow Newmai and officials of the Environment Department.
During the inspection, N Biren Singh expressed satisfaction with the work in progress.
Around 60 percent of the construction work has been completed till now and is expected to complete before March 2022, he said.
N Biren said that the sewerage treatment plant is being constructed as a part of the Rejuvenation and Conservation of Nambul River project under the National River Conservation Plan.
Sewerage and waste drained out from places along the Nambul River would be brought through pipelines at the plant for treatment and after distillation, the water could be drained to the Nambul River or provided for irrigation to paddy fields around the plant, he said.
He further informed that a retaining wall would be constructed along the river near the treatment plant.
Raising concern over the pollution caused by dumping of waste along and in the Nambul River and its impact on the health of Loktak Lake, he stated that Home Department has started conducting mass campaigns to keep rivers of the State clean before the arrival of rainy season and appealed to the public to give their support in the campaigns.
It may be mentioned that the Sewerage Treatment Plant is being constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 97.72 crore and has a capacity of treating 16 Million Litre (water) per Day (MLD).
Later, the Chief Minister attended a Mega Cleaning Campaign for saving the environment under the name "Save Nambul, Save Environment" organised by Mongshangei Kanba Apunba Lup.
Addressing the gathering, he appreciated the Mongshangei Kanba Lup for its voluntary contribution towards keeping the Nambul River and the environment clean and safe.
Forest and Environment Minister Awangbow Newmai and MLA Karam Shyam also attended the cleanliness campaign.
