Incessant rainfall that heavily lashed for seven consecutive days has caused massive destruction to paddy plants at the northern part of Ukhrul district, especially in Kalhang village under Chingai block, reports our correspondent.
The down pour gave a big blow to the villagers whose sole livelihood is paddy cultivation as the overflowed water from swollen Rangazak river submerged almost all the standing paddy plants which are awaiting for harvest.
Around 85 to 90 percent of the villagers of this part of the district rely on paddy cultivation.

According to villagers, the destructions extend from Rangazak Kong via Narei to Haluwon, approximately 6 kms, ruining properties of around Rs 25 lakhs.
Interacting with The Sangai Express, student leader, Shanchui said that the recent rain has brought greatest sorrow in two decades to the villagers.
A visibly dejected old farmer, who has been waiting for harvest, said that his year-long hardwork has been ruined in two-three days.
Student leader Shanchui said that most of the victims are poor farmers and these losses may create a serious impact to their lives if proper measure is not taken up by the concerned authority at the earliest.
Representatives of the students body who accompanied this correspondent called on all the denizens of the district to acknowledge the natural disaster occurring in the area.
They observed that the concerned authority must immediately rehabilitate the affected villagers and send relief materials at the earliest.
