Man found hung to death, locals block road

Thoubal, December 14 2012:
Discovery of a 34-year old man found hanging at Thoubal Athokpam Bazar sparked off a wildcat agitation with locals suspecting foul play and blocking the Imphal-Moreh road this morning.
The deceased identified as one Thongam Romio s/o Th Herachandra Singh of Thoubal Athokpam Awang Leikai was spotted hung to death with a woollen scarf at the verandah of a grocery shop in near the Thoubal Veterinary office.
The shop belongs to one Sagolsem Brojeshwor Singh.
Morning walkers reportedly spotted the victim.
Forensic science experts of the police department removed body and has deposited the same at JNIMS morgue.
According to Romio's mother Leimarenbi, her son as usual went out for his morning walk in the early hours today.
Describing Romio, who runs a beauty parlour near Thoubal DC office, as a cool and friendly person, Leimarenbi also demanded that necessary measures be taken up to track down and punish the culprit(s) involved in her son's murder.

As news about Romio's death spread, locals came out and barricaded the Highway in between Arong Thong and District Horticulture office at around 1.30 pm by piling up boulders/logs and setting tyres on fire.
However, arrival of a Thoubal district police team led by SP Dr Ak Jhalajit and after talks with the agitators the road blockade was withdrawn at around 4 pm.
In connection with the controversial death of Romio, a Joint Action Committee has been formed with the Committee convenor informing that a memorandum would be handed over to the DC (Thoubal) tomorrow for an impartial investigation and arrest of the culprits, if any, within December 16, failing which intense agitation would be re-launched.
Till the filing of this report, Romio's corpse is still laying at JNIMS morgue with both the family members and the JAC refusing to claim it.
