Imphal, December 12 2014 :
Calls to end all forms of violence against women reverberated at the Nupi Lan anniversary function held today at THAU Ground here.
Many speakers who addressed the gathering called upon all the indigenous people to unite and demonstrate once again that "we cannot tolerate dominance by outsiders' .
The commemorative function jointly organised by AMKIL, Poirei Leimarol, Kanglamei, WACAK, KIL, Tami-Chingmi Apunba Lup, Nupi Samaj, CHITUWA, IKAL, MAPWAK, CLK, AMAWOVA and Kangleichal was attended by people of all ethnic groups.
PANDM president Yumnamcha Dilipkumar, Prof MC Arun, Loushal president Mutum Churamani, social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram, Associate Prof Dr Ch Sheelaramani and Advocate Angomcha Araba were among the many speakers who spoke at the function.
Yumnamcha Dilipkumar said that people's casual treatment of social crimes has been compounding the same issue unwittingly.
It is because of the sustained and extensive women's movement that the youth of Manipur could be saved from the jaws of intoxicating drugs.
The advent of British colonialism in Manipur brought about unprecedented changes apart from landing the society in total anarchy.
The path of development and progress is always strewn with challenges.
To overcome these challenges, unity is a must, said Prof MC Arun.
Mutum Churamani reminded that sacred Kangla was denied access to the people of Manipur for more than 113 years.
It was only after the historic nude protest by those brave mothers in front of the western gate of Kangla which forced Assam Rifles to vacate the sacred site.
In the past, Manipur was economically self -reliant.
But incessant influx of outsiders rapidly rendered the State's economy dependent.
Now outsiders have taken control of all commercial activities, said Dr Dhanabir Laishram.
Alleging that many innocent people are being killed by the State on fabricated charges, 76th Nupi Lan Numit Observation Committee convenor Y Kamalini went on to blame the Government for condoning security forces involved in killing innocent civilians.
It's time to awaken the suppressed mass and wage a social reformation movement for new, progressive Manipur, she added.
