Ukhrul villagers' agri-exposure tour

In order to give a first hand experience of agriculture technologies and modern farming,17 farmers from Manipur's hill district Ukhrul will tour various farming sites in Himachal Pradesh.
The villagers will be visiting farms in Shimla and Solan during their 17 days agricultural exposure trip which is scheduled to conclude on August 9 next month.
The villagers who are taking part in the exposure tour are from Chalou, Lungshang, Khambi, Khangkhui, Nungshong, Pushing, New Cannan, Yumnam Khunou, Tolloi, Ramva, Tuinem and Awang Kasom.
"The Agricultural Tour has been conceptualised to give the farmers a first-hand experience in the latest trends and technologies of modern farming by visiting various Agri-institutes and interaction with agricultural scientists at Solan and Shimla in Himachal Pradesh", says PRO Major Saunat Kamat of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South)in a press release.
"Solan and Shimla were chosen because of the similar weather, soil and altitudes as obtained in Ukhrul" .
The tour aims at introducing modern agricultural techniques including horticulture and floriculture techniques in Ukhrul District to make the farmers self-reliant and introduce more economically profitable agriculture, the release added.
Major General CA Krishnan,the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) also interacted with the farmers and encouraged them to fully utilise the tour programme to explore the latest trends in agriculture.
He said this at the formal flagging off ceremony at IGAR(South) complex at Mantripukhuri.
The 17 Bn AR based at Ukhrul town,84 km north east of the state capital organized the agriculture exposure trip as part of the annual civic action programme.
During last year's summer Assam Rifles authority had assured that Sajik Tampak in Chandel district of Manipur would be developed into a beautiful and exemplary model village by taking up other forms of agricultural activities to remove the illegal cultivation of poppy plants.
Assam Rifles soldiers also joined hands with the Central Agriculture University to encourage the villagers to take up agriculture and other allied activities.
