Two persons, including the State secretary of Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur (ZSUM) have been shot dead by unidentified gunmen at a Tamenglong district area last night.
According to police report, both were slain inside a house in 24 (Choubis) Mile near Longkao (Nungkao) village, which is about 27 kms south-cast of Tousem police station, at around 7 pm yesterday.
The deceased have been identified as ZSUM secretary Chunthuigai Kamei (32) s/o Makuphun of Marangjing (Makhuam) village and Jenao Panmei (35) s/o Chamkhandai of Ramgaijang in Jiribam subdivision.
Both died on the spot when a group of unidentified persons with sophisticated weapons opened fire while they were inside the house.
In denunciation of the killing, business establishments and educational institutions remained shut at Tamenglong district headquarters today.
ZSUM also condemned the slaying of Chunthuigai Kamei in the strongest term.
In statement issued today, ZSUM Information and Publicity secretary David Kamei contended that Chunthuigai was shot dead even after identifying himself as a student activist.
The gunmen reportedly shot dead Jenao first before murdering Chunthuigai.
David maintained that as a neutral agency Chunthuigai was actively involved in bringing about reconciliation among the warring armed groups in Tamenglong region.Terming the killing as an affront to the peace-loving citizens in general and the student community in particular, he described the demise of Chunthuigai as an irreparable loss for the Zeliangrong people.Conveying solidarity of the ZSUM to the bereaved family, David also appealed to all concerned to shun violence.
Condemning the killing, ZSUM volunteers have launched various forms of agitation, including impromptu blockade of roads. The agitation will continue till the issue is resolved in an amicable manner, informed some of the volunteers.
