District level workshop held at Bishnupur

A one-day District Level Orientation Workshop on National Tobacco Control Programme organized by NCD Cell and District Health Society Bishnupur was conducted for Stockholder Organisations of Bishnupur District at Conference Hall, District Hospital Bishnupur yesterday.
The workshop was attended by SDO Bishnupur Lalithambigai (IAS) as chief guest, CMO/DMD Bishnupur Dr T Manihar Singh as functional president and SDPO Bishnupur Police Luxmi Thingbaijam as guest of honour.
State Nodal Officer of National Tobacco Control Programme, Somorjit Ningombam spoke on "Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act 2003" and "Harmful effects of Tobacco Consumption" as resource person and deliberated on the various provisions of COTPA 2003 such as a separate smoking zone, ill effects of smoking to 2nd person smokers, 3rd person smokers and possible health issues caused by consumption of tobacco products.
Delivering the key note address, founder & president of Sangai Youth Tobacco Free & Educational Organisation, Premjit Thokchom stated that the workshop was conducted to deliberate on the effective steps and measures to prevent widespread used of tobacco products even though it's a difficult task adding that it is alarming to see Manipur ranked 3rd among the largest consumers of tobacco in India.
As such, it is high time that COTPA 2003 should be implemented in the State to curb the ever increasing tobacco related health issues which is climbing up at alarming rate.
