Education Minister Oken spells out his priorities

Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro has categorically stated that no teachers working under Education Department would be allowed to get transferred every now and then as it is prevalent today.
He was speaking at the reception function organized jointly in his honour by Department of Education (S), Education (U), SCERT, Adult Education and Technical Education at the auditorium of Manipur Film Development Corporation here today.
Minister Okendro further stated that a teacher cannot be transferred every now and then by some senior officials of the department under their own discretionary power.
If at all a teacher has to be transferred, he/she will be transferred after the final exams of school or colleges have been completed.
Assuring that the number of employees in department will be finalized within a short period of time, the Minister informed that the aided schools will be brought up under the PPP model and converted them model schools.

Scouts and Yoga subjects will also be included in the syllabus and the prescribed text books will be made available to the students on time, he added.
The Minister further stated that students who are living below the poverty line will be given incentives in order to develop them right from the foundation level.
The incentive was previously given only to the toppers.
More priority will also be give vocational and technical education.
In connection with the Manipur Education Service being proposed by the state government, the Minister observed that this is history in the making and expressed optimism that Manipur Education Service will be great help in streamlining the education department and it's functioning.
This will in no way create problems to the staffs of the Education department.
But the new rule needs to be implemented with the support of the public, he added.
Furthermore, the Minister assured that the long pending issue of absence of regular Principals in schools would be looked into and solved accordingly.
State Project Director of SSA and RMSA Sumant, who was also present on the occasion, pointed out that there are at present around 20,000 employees in the Education Department.
These employees need to work with sincerity in order to bring about a change in the department.
He also informed that the department has taken up various steps to provide compulsory education to all the children of the state.
K Moses Chalai, Commissioner of Education; Dr J Suresh Babu, Principal Secretary of Education (S); W Rajen, Director of Education (S) and other top officials of Education Department were also present on the occasion.
Later in the evening, interacting with mediapersons at Hotel Imphal, Minister Oken reiterated that his first priority as a Minister is to bring about a drastic change in the educational sector of the state and appealed to the media to give the fullest co-operation in the regard.
He also said that website of the Education Department would be updated with latest information on the activities of the departments and make them known to the people.
Since Education and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution are very sensitive departments, utmost care would be taken to handle the two departments, he assured, and added that all possible arrangements would be made to ensure availability of PDS items to the general public on time.
