Kakching, March 16 2021:
Farmers of Wangoo in Kakching district have urged the Government and authorities concerned to make 'Wangoo Sandangkhong River Lift Irrigation (RLI) Scheme' functional inorder to provide water to paddy fields of Hiram Makha Loukol and Sabam Loukol in Wangoo Sandangkhong.
A team of media persons and farmers visited the site of Wangoo Sandangkhong RLI Scheme today which has been lying non functional.
Speaking to media persons after the visit, Laishram Deven, member of Wangoo Gram Panchayat said that Wangoo is a place which has regular supply of water throughout the year located along the Manipur River and with the help of RLI schemes taken up by the State Government, it has helped the farmers in agriculture and other allied activities thereby generating a regular source of income before.
However since the last 4 -5 years, the electric motor pump installed at Wangoo Sandangkhong RLI Scheme was taken for repairing and it has not been reinstalled till date and one diesel horse power pump used in the RLI scheme also stopped working, he added.

Ever since the farmers have been dependent on seasonal rainfall to carry out the agricultural activities and it poses a great hindrance since the rainfall is unpredictable.
Therefore such a situation has impacted the economy of the locals majorly, he continued.
He sought the intervention of the Chief Minister and the authorities concerned to make the RLI scheme functional at the earliest in the interest of the suffering farmers by installing a electric driven water pump since there is regular supply of electricity.
One of the farmers said that RLI Scheme can provide water to around 200 hectares of paddy fields in Hiram Makha Loukol and Sabam Loukol and for the said purpose canal was constructed for a few kilometres.
But it also got damaged and the farmers are renting motor pumps to pumped up water to be used in the fields however it has not been able to reach the required areas.
Lastly he urged the Government and authorities concerned to construct a 3 kilometres long canal and to install an electric pump in the RLI Scheme to help in providing regular supply of water to the said paddy fields.
