Imphal, March 16 2021:
Crime against women is increasing because of lack of "sanskar" in the society, said Nishikant Singh Sapam today.
He was speaking as chief guest at an Akhang Kanbi Meitei Chanu award presentation ceremony organised by the Organisation for India Women Against Crime at its office at Canchipur.
He presented the award to families of six victims.
The award carries Rs 10,000, a shawl and citation each.
Nishikant, owner of The Sangai Express, who is planning to contest the coming General Assembly elections, said lack of discipline and respect for women are factors for increasing abuse and crime against women.
Curbing crime against women and girls requires all stakeholders-parents, guardians, society, NGOs, and Government agencies working collectively to educate people especially younger generations on the issue.
Parents, guardians, the society and teachers should teach the younger generations and children to be disciplined and respectful to others including women and girls, he said.
Nishikant said, "The Organisation for India Women Against Crime is giving the "Akhang Kanbi Meitei Chanu" award to families of rape victims since 2018 .

The award carries some monetary assistance, which I extend to help and assist the family of the victims" .
Nishikant said he started donating the amount for the award after he heard about the pain and grief of a victim in a programme organised by the organisation in recent years.
"One day, my Editor--Ta Khogen (Editor of Manipuri edition of The Sangai Express) told me about the sad story of a victim while attending a programme organised by the Indian Women Against Crime and he expressed his desire to assist the victim's family.
Touched by the story, I immediately went to the venue of the programme and heard about the victim.
Since that day, I am funding the award money every year to help the victims and their families," Nishikant narrated.
He stated that he would continue to provide support and assist women victims of crimes without discriminating on the ground of religion, race and caste.
Helping others should know no boundary, he added.
On solving crimes against women and girls, he said media have a large role to play in educating the public about the ill impacts of such crimes.
At the event, Nishikant also launched "Chahisigi Yaoshang Thabalsina", the 6th Episode of the webseries-Cheitheng produced by the Organisation for Indian Women Against Crime.
The webseries is available on YouTube.
Former Head of Department of Medicine at RIMS and leader of Leima Chanu Nawa Tengbang Lup, Professor Sorokhaibam Bhagyabati also spoke about crimes against women and urged all to collectively fight the issue.
