Imphal, October 14 2016:
A woman who has been suffering from Arteriovenous Malformation or AVM in short has been successfully treated by removing her womb.
AVM is a very, very rare health problem and it is said that there just around 100 such cases in the whole world.
It is also reported that the AVM case detected in Manipur may the first in India .
The woman suffering from AVM underwent surgical operation at JNIMS yesterday under the supervision of Assist Prof (Gynaecologist) Dr Paikhomba Kharibam.
Speaking to mediapersons today, Dr Paikhomba said that AVM is caused by intertwining of blood vessels (arteries and veins).
Intertwining of blood vessels can happen in any organ and it highly increases chances of bleeding.
The patient gave birth to a child about seven years back through Caesarean Section.
She became pregnant in July this year and she went in for abortion.
But she was bleeding profusely and she was brought to JNIMS.
She was operated upon by a team of doctors yesterday and her womb was removed successfully.
The patient is still in the hospital though her health conditions including blood pressure and heart beat rate are normal, Dr Paikhomba said.
