Imphal, October 14 2016:
Reminding that the State Government has been asked to approach the Centre to include the Meeteis/ Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe list of the Constitution of India within October, the Co-ordinating Body of Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur ( CBSTDCM ) today expressed hope that the Government will do the needful in consonance with the aspirations of the people.
In a statement, CBSTDCM said that after the mass rally on September 18 to demand that the Meeteis/Meiteis be included in the ST list of the Constitution of India a public meeting was held wherein it was decided to ask the State Government to approach the Centre on the issue within October this year.
A memorandum in this connection was also submitted to the State Government on September 21, added CBSTDCM.
Stating that what is demanded is within the Constitution of India, CBSTDCM added that the Meeteis/Meiteis are indigenous people of the land and need a Constitutional mechanism to ensure their survival.
It is important for all to discuss what should be done in case the State Government sidesteps the issue, added CBSTDCM.
As part of the campaign, a discussion session was held today with Advocates at RIMS road and during the session a Legal Cell of CBSTDCM was opened, said the statement and added that it was also agreed that such discussions will continue to be held in the future too.
