Sit-in protests widely held against murder of girl students

Sit-in protests were widely staged today at various educational institutions demanding stringent punishment to the murderers of girl students, ****** of Wangbal Heirithong Leikai in Thoubal district and ****** of Tharoijam in Imphal west.
******, a class II student of Charei Nongkhum Shanglen School and ******, a class XII student of Chaoyaima Higher Secondary school were murdered after alleged rapes in separate incidents that occurred on November 5 and November 9 respectively.
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), which spearheaded the mass protest today sought prompt capital punishment for rapists while criticizing the Education minister for allegedly keeping mum on the rising cases of rape and murder of young students which have outraged the people of the state.

"Death penalty should be given to all rapists and the Manipur Government should formulate a policy to check the rising crimes against women and children or else we'll take up intense agitation," AMSU president Thiyam Naresh told media at the union's head office here.
Naresh also expressed gratitude to all the students who took part in the mass protest.
Naresh alleged that the Manipur Government, particularly Education minister M Okendro has remained silent on the sensational rape and murder cases, saying AMSU has taken serious note of the attitude of the minister.
Protesting the murders of the girl students after rapes, students of Imphal College held a sit-in protest at its gate beginning around 10 am today.
During the sit-in, the agitators expressed concern over the frequent incidents of rapes and murders of girls in Manipur.
The students demanded immediate and stringent actions against the culprits, while lamenting over the usual delayed action on the part of the government agencies as well as favoritism in dealing with the perpetrators.
Students of Saint Dominic Savio High School, Uripok Khaidem Leikai organized a sit-in protest at their school premises, while students of Laimingthon Awangba School, Khurai also joined the statewide sit-in protest at their school compound, demanding stringent punishment to the student killers.
The All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) had on Monday appealed to the students of the state to organize mass sit-in agitations at their educational institutions on November 11 .
Earlier on Monday, the All India Students Federation (AISF), Manipur State Committee, in a statement, strongly denounced the rape and killing of ****** by her relative brother on November 9.The students' body has demanded exemplary punishment to the alleged murderer Thiyam Suresh, who has already been arrested by Thoubal police.
Delayed action and light punishment for the rapists and murderers have help in the abatement of crimes against girls and women, said the statement from Laishram Lenin, State Secretary of Manipur state committee of AISF.
Meanwhile, the teaching and non-teaching staff of Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School, Thoubal have today condoled the demise of its student Thiyam Bidyarani Devi who was studying in Class XII (Arts) in the school.
The meeting held at the school observed two-minute silence for peace of the departed soul, a release from the Principal of the school said.
