Imphal, November 11 2014:
Even as sit-ins were staged today at various educational institutions of the State against the alleged rape and murder of two young students, the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has warned that it would launch a series of intense form of agitation in collaboration with the public if the accused persons reportedly involved in two different rape and murder cases are not awarded capital punishment.
Addressing a press meet at its office today, AMSU president Th Naresh said that incidences of violence against women including murder after rape have occurred more frequently in the recent past.
AMSU vehemently condemned the alleged inaction of the Govt over the matter.
Naresh further said that the reported murder after rape of two students recently was nothing but a challenge posed to the students' community while urging the Govt to take fitting action against the perpetrators of the crimes.
It was also very unfortunate that the Education Minister is still silent and has not come out with any policy to tackle such occurrences, Naresh said.
He warned that the students' body in collaboration with the public would launch intense forms of agitation unless capital punishment is awarded to the accused persons at the earliest.
Although the Central Govt has come out with a slew of measures against atrocities, including rape and murder, on NE people, the State Govt has kept mum on the matter, he alleged.
Meanwhile, sit-in protests were staged at different colleges and schools of the State today against the alleged rape and murder of two students recently.
