Five trucks were set ablaze allegedly by bandh supporters at Lunghar village, while police resorted to blank fire to disperse blockade volunteers at TM Kasom village under Litan Police station on Saturday evening.
According to Ukhrul police, the Imphal-bound five trucks, which were ferrying rice and chemical fertilizers, were intercepted by suspected blockade supporters at around 7.30pm and set on fire at Phangrei in the vicinity of Lunghar village, 35kms from the district headquarters.
On receiving the reports, the district administration had rushed two fire tenders to the incident site.
However, the trucks were reportedly damaged beyond repair.
The registration number of the five trucks could not be confirmed till the filling of this report.
In another incident today, security forces-a combined team of police, commando and Assam Rifles resorted to blank fire after blockade volunteers attempted to stop three trucks carrying FCI supplies at TM Kasom village under Litan police station at around 4pm.A reliable source said the three Imphal-bound trucks left Ukhrul FCI godown this afternoon under police escort.
As on Friday, it is reported that about 36 trucks transporting FCI supplies are currently at the FCI station in Ukhrul.
In the wake of the mounting economic blockade along the state supply lines, the Okram Ibobi government has also sought help from para-military forces and upped its efforts to bring in supplies to quell the acute shortage of essentials in Manipur.
