2nd Tribal Languages Day observed

The 2nd Tribal Languages Day was observed by the Council of Tribal Languages and Literature Societies, Manipur (CTLLSM) at the conference hall of Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Chingmeirong today .
The observance held under the theme “Rediscovery of Manipur” was attended by MLA of Phungyar AC, K Leishiyo as chief guest; Director, Department of Language Planning and Implementation, Manipur, Dr M Mahavir Singh as president; Dr Kasingkhai, president of Zou Literarture Society and CTLLSM chairman, Ragongning Gangmei as guests of honour .
Speaking on the occasion, K Leishiyo said that Tribal Languages Day has been observed since 2014 with an aim to preserve the endangered languages of the State .
He said that the Government recognises 18 of the 29 tribal languages of the State and concerted efforts must be put in to develop the remaining ones .
Stating that there are many ethnic groups in developed countries, the MLA expressed apprehension over possible extinction of minor languages in the State if major languages continue to dominate .
He highlighted the need to secure Manipuri language which has been included in the UNESCO list of endangered languages .
He also said that the Government is trying to develop tribal langauges of the State.
