Imphal, September 19 2014 :
Lamsang Bazar Nupi Khunai along with Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA), Lamsang Unit organised a liquor drive at Lamsang Bazar today.
The drive was organised in protest against the open sale of illicit intoxicants such as liquor in the general area of Lamsang and the indifference shown by Lamsang Excise station and police station regarding the matter.
Two suppliers, carrying 30 litres of local made liquor from Phayeng, were cornered by the team.
The apprehendees were later released after a peaceful talk with the team.
Nupi Khunai Lamsang president Sh Rashi alleged that the excise station does not function properly.
Many a time, she said that when the organisation approached the station to hand over liquor caught during such drives at Lamsang Bazar, not a single staff was to be found in attendance.
The organisations further lamented the OC's argument stating that the station could not even bring in a sum of Rs 10000 per month to the head quarters.
The organisations, therefore, has requested the head quarters to focus more on checking the growing trade of illegal drugs and saving lives than on how much money an excise station is bringing in.
The seized liquor was later set on fire in front of the waiting shed near Lamsang toll tax.
The organisation would further continue such drives in the future, it added.
