Imphal, September 12 2014 :
Detention of JCILPS leaders and students cannot deter the mass movement for enforcement of Inner Line Permit System in Manipur, said Patsoi Zilla Parishad member Thokchom Sumanta.
Speaking to media persons at Tera Yengkhom Leirak today, Sumanta said that both the Constitution of India as well as the United Nations have due provisions for protection of indigenous people.
The demand for ILPS is quite justified.
ILPS or a similar mechanism should be enacted without undue delay before the indigenous people of Manipur face what the indigenous Tripuris encountered decades back.
It is a misplaced understanding if the Government is thinking about suppressing the ILPS movement by detaining activists and shutting down educational institutions, Sumanta said.
Closing down educational institutions indefinitely which are spared even at times of war is something unheard of in any part of the world.
He also condemned the ambush laid by suspected NSCN-IM cadres at Ukhrul in which one commando personnel was killed and two others injured.
