Tonsana to contest in Thangmeiband and Thongju ACs : Scrutiny okays all 7 candidates

Scrutiny for the by-election to Thangmeiband and Thongju Assembly Constituencies scheduled on November 21 was held today and nomination papers filed by all the seven candidates have been given clearance.
Altogether four candidates are fighting the by-election in Thongju A/C while three are in the fray in Thangmeiband A/C.Interestingly, Dr GA Tonsana of Manipur Democratic People's Front (MDPF) is contesting in both the Assembly segments.
Apart from GA Tonsana, Bijoy Koijam of Congress, Th Bishwajit of BJP and independent candidate Okram Ingo are contesting the by-election in Thongju A/C.The scrutiny held in the office of SDO Porompat gave clearance to all the nomination papers filed by the four candidates.
But there was certain controversy with regard to Bijoy Koijam's educational qualification, especially his Class X certificates.
Kh Joykishan of BJP and Jyotin Waikhom of Congress are the two other candidates vying for the Thangmeiband seat.
Nomination papers filed by all the three candidates were given the green signal after scrutiny at the office of SDO Lamphelpat.
Notably, November 7 is the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers.
For the first time, a separate symbol of NOT A would be displayed in the EVMs which would be used in the by-election.
Already, general observers for the by-election have arrived at Imphal and they have taken up their assignments, informed an official source.
It has been already reported that photographs of candidates would be displayed on the EVMs.
Meanwhile, Joint CEO N Praveen Singh has convened a joint meeting of the representatives of recognised National/ State political parties of Manipur, DCs/DEOs.
Imphal East/ Imphal West, SPs of the two districts and SDOs/EROs of Porompat and Lamphelpat at 3 pm of November 9 at the conference hall of Old Secretariat, South Block to discuss various election related matters so as to ensure that the by-election is held in a free and fair manner.
On the other hand, IAS officer Sandeep Kumar has been appointed as general observer for the by-election with respect to Thangmeiband A/C.
