State-run hospitals crippled from dearth of infrastructures

Even though private hospitals with state-of-the-art healthcare infrastructures are mushrooming in the State, the state-run hospitals and other health centres including Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) lack sufficient number of beds, equipments and manpower.
According to sources from the State Health Department, 2042 beds and 1740 doctors are required for the state-run 557 hospitals and health centres.
However, these hospitals have only 1541 beds and 966 doctors.
JNIMS has 376 beds as against the actual requirement of 500 beds while State Leprosy Hospital has only six beds as against 30 beds needed.
Notably, the State TB Hospital has all the required 100 beds.
The district hospitals also have only 295 beds each as against the requirement of 450 beds each.
However, the sub-district hospital has all the required 50 beds.
As for the 16 community health centres, there are only 344 beds as against the requirement of 450 beds.
Moreover, 80 Primary Health Centres have 370 beds against the requirement of 432 beds.
The 557 state-run healthcare institutes include one general hospital, one TB hospital, one leprosy hospital, seven district hospitals, one sub-district hospital, 16 CHCs, 80 PHCs, 420 PHSCs, one allopathy dispensary and 10 Ayush dispensaries.
On the other hand, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) which is under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has all the required 1074 beds.
About 26 private hospitals and clinics are also functioning in the State under Manipur Nursing Home and Clinic Registration Act.
The state-run healthcare institutes also lack large of doctors and nurses.
There are only 862 doctors as against 1614 sanctioned posts, but the required 96 dental surgeons have been filled up.
Moreover, there are only eight Ayush doctors as against 30 sanctioned posts.
The number of staff nurses is also inadequate with only 594 out of 714 sanctioned posts.
