Workshop on women's empowerment begins

A two-day training of the trainer on 'Empowering Women Through Use of Right to Information Act 2005' commenced from today at Hotel Nirmala, Thangal Bazar.
The training programme organised by Manipuri Chanura Leisham Marup (Macha Leima) with the support of British High Commission was inaugurated by former District and Session Judge Kh Gomati Devi as the chief guest.
Speaking at the inauguration programme, Kh Gomati said unity, concerted movement and will power of the women activists will be able to eradicate the menaces of corruption and nepotism from the system.
Taking serious note of embezzling essential items meant for the economic under-privileged section of the society under the public distribution system, the former Manipur Judicial Service officer suggested that only through firm determination and will-power of the women activists justice could be delivered.
Conveying that enactment of Right to Information Act in 2005 validates a common citizen to seek relevant information on any matter, she also advised all concerned to approach higher authorities in case the right is denied by the Public Information Officer concerned.
Further informing that members of Legal Services Authority could be approached to seek justice by the petitioner, Gomati said awareness campaigns are being conducted periodically to make the citizens fully understand their rights.
As functional president Macha Leima RTI Apunba Nupi Lup chairperson Thokchom Muhini Devi conveyed that the Lup had been providing all possible assistance to the citizens, particularly the women folk in exposing misdemeanours of officials associated with the implementation of NREGS and other welfare programmes.
Expressing that MLAs, Ministers and leaders of local bodies not only acknowledge plight of the common people but also contribute their mite in addressing genuine grievances of the citizens, Muhini said without rectifying the system it would be futile to expect overall development of the State.
She also opined that housewives have equally important role to play in moulding the society for home is the right place to bring about holistic change in the society.
