To mark the occupation of Kangla and unfurling of Union Jack inside Kangla by British invaders after defeating the Manipuri Warriors on April 27,1891 in the historic Anglo-Manipuri War, the International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA) today observed Dark Day.
The Dark Day observance function under the aegis of IPSA held at Iboyaima S humang Leela Shanglen was graced by Dr Kh Ratan, MLA; Prof H Joykumar, Department of History (MU); and Elangbam Johnson, President of IPSA as the chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Kh Ratan said the people of the State should salute and learn the spirit of the forefathers who put up a stiff resistance even if they knew that they would be defeated.
Dr H Joykumar observed how Manipur lost its independence is written in the pages of history while urging all concerned to learn a lesson from history.
Speaking at the occasion, social activist, RK Ranendrajit wondered as to how the People of Manipur were denied basic rights like right to life even after attaining independence under the Indian Union for 63 years.
Continuance of 11 years of agitation by Irom Sharmila could mean different thing, he said.
UCM President Sapamcha Jadumani said the people of Manipur could not get basic amenities like electricity, drinking water,even as many developmental works are implemented in the State.
The people are economically and socially insecure.
Floral tribute was also paid to fallen heroes of the Anglo-Manipuri War during the observance programme.
