48 hrs gen strike called off

The 48 hours general strike called by the JAC against the killing of Md Hasmad Ali alias Babu has been called midway following an understanding with the Govt today.
According to a statement, representatives of AMMOCOC, MCM, MMWO and JAC held a meeting with the SP, Imphal East and other representatives of the Govt today at the office of SP, Imphal East.
The representatives of the civil society organisations were reportedly told that some of the suspects in the killing were already in police custody and full police investigation is on to probe the crime.
They were also reportedly assured that all accused involved in the killing would be arrested soon.
The CSOs representatives were further told that the killing of Md Hasmad Ali was not related with stealing of a cow.
Following these assurance, the JAC has called off its general strike.
The CSOs at the same time said that a peace rally will be organised by carrying the body of Md Hasmad Ali after conducting the post mortem examination.
The JAC has urged all concerned to join the peace rally.
Though normal traffic across the State was not severely affected on the first day of the 48-hour general strike imposed by the JAC constituted against the killing of Md Hasmad Ali, several general strike supporters came out and crippled vehicular movement by blocking roads at Minuthong area today.
Security at Minuthong area was tightened to prevent any untoward incident.
