Imphal, July 27, 2012:
Following an understanding between the agitating groups and high ranking State police officials, the team of Manipur police commandos which left Imphal yesterday for deployment in Moreh was allowed to enter the border town today.
It may be mentioned that people of Moreh were agitating against commando deployment.
A team of high ranking, police officials led by Additional DGP (LO) LM Khaute and Chandel SP E Priyokumar and SDPO of Moreh, Balram held meetings with the representatives of agitating organisations on two different occasions at the office of Hill Tribal Council today.
Later, both the sides agreed on opening of a commando post on trial basis for three months at the border town.
LM Khaute assured the agitating groups to give strict instructions to the commandos not to give any unnecessary harassment to the denizens of Moreh.
Although, representatives of HTC, Kuki Chiefs Association, KSO and Kuki Women's Union for Human Rights attended the meeting, representatives from other communities were not present.
Two commando teams each from Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal districts reached Moreh at around 6.30 pm.
Meanwhile, claiming that the prevailing law and order situation of Moreh demands deployment of commandos in the border, Home Minister Gaikhangam has categorically ruled out any possibility of the Government going back on its decision.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, Gaikhangam stated that being a State force commandos can be deployed anywhere within the territory of Manipur if the situation demands.
Commandos have been already deployed in Jiribam which is also a border town, he said.
Maintaining that people of Moreh should not oppose deployment of commandos at the border town, the Home Minister appealed to the Moreh denizens to extend cooperation to the commandos when they discharge their duties.
In case of any unlawful activities or excesses from the side of commandos, the State Government would take up befitting actions.
