Imphal, June 04 2021:
Chief Minister N Biren on Friday performed Mahayagya (grand offering) to Shri Shri Govindajee Temple to protect the state and its people from the Covid-19 pandemic and minimise its impact.
The ritual was performed along with Purnahutti at the temple located at Palace Compound in the presence of Hindu pandits during the auspicious timing of 8.30 to 10 am as suggested by Hindu religious leaders.
Mention may be made that N Biren is also the chairman of Shri Shri Govindajee Temple Board.
Board's steering committee chairman MLA Thokchom Satyabrata and other present at the event.
Similar rituals were conducted during early times whenever plagues or epidemics befell upon the society such as cholera epidemic in 1898 & 1908 and people believed that performing such offerings helped in containing the epidemic.
From time to time, rituals like milking 108 cows were also conducted during drought.
The Mahayagya was performed after a gap 110 years since King Churachand performed one during his time.
The ritual was part of a series of religious rituals to be conducted as per decision arrived at during a joint session with religious leaders of Hindu, Christian and Islam faiths with the hope of seeking divine blessings to contain the pandemic.
Islamic leaders also performed their rituals on Friday while Christian religious leaders will pray on Saturday.
