Puya Meithaba Numit to be observed on Oct 17

Puya Mei Thakhibagi Apunba Ningshing Lup (PUMANIL) in association with different organisations will observe Puya Meithaba Puwarigi Amamba Numit in commemoration of the 284th anniversary of burning of Puyas (ancient chronicles of Manipur) at Kangla Uttra Shanglen on October 17 .
Speaking at a press conference held at the office of ACOAM-Lup Kangelipak, PUMANIL convenor Chandramani Khumancha said that the ancient Chronicles of Manipur were burnt on the 17th day of Manipuri lunar month of Mera in front of Kangla Uttra Shanglen.
He said that ACOAM-Lup Kangleipak along with Pandit Loishang, Chanura Lamjing Lup, Kangleipak, KIL, Kangla Mei, Apokpa Marup and Panthoibi Sindam Shanglen began to observe the day from last year.
Large number of people including those from outside the State would attend the observation, he added.
After conducting ritual ceremonies at Kangla Uttra Shanglen, main function of the observation would be held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, he said.
Manipuris used to preserve historical accounts in writing in Puyas.
However, these rare historical accounts were burnt in 1732 during the reign of King Pamheiba as he wished his people to embrace Hinduism.
Stating that Manipuri is a community which has rich culture and traditions, Chandramani said that this incident gave a huge impact to the life and culture of the Manipuris.
Puya Meithaba Puwarigi Amamba Numit would be observe to protect and preserve the culture and tradition of Manipur, he said.
Finance, transport, publicity and mobilization subcommittees had been formed to observe the day successfully, he said.
Chandramani urged the public to extend monetary and material assistance to the organising committee in this regard.
