Bhopal, September 12 2011:
Group Captain Amit Gupta, 51, has been taken into custody after family of Anjali Gupta, the first woman flying officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to be court martialled, alleged that Amit had a live-in-relationship with her and had even promised to marry her after divorcing his wife.
"The parents of Anjali Gupta have alleged that Amit had promised Anjali marriage since long and on his refusal, she committed suicide," Rajesh Bhadoria, City Superintendent of Police, told reporters.
Anjali had committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in Amit's Bhopal residence on Sunday.
Bhadoria told TOI, "We have taken Amit into custody for interrogations." After the family of Anjali landed in Bhopal, her suicide case took a different turn.
Till Sunday, the police was clueless and was going through the version of Amit posted in Nagpur.
However, on Monday, Anjali's mother Uma Gupta and her elder sister Alka Garg and her husband Jitendra Garg rushed to Bhopal when they learnt about the news of Anjali's suicide.
"The family has accused that Amit had a live-in-relationship with Anjali for many years and he had promised to marry her," Bhadoria told reporters.
In fact, he said quoting her family, Amit's wife also knew about the relationship and this had led to strained relations between the husband and wife.
According to Bhadoria, Amit's wife also objected over this relationship.
Amit on Sunday told police that he did not know about the Anjali's family and she had "only broke her journey" in Bhopal.
In fact, Amit knew the whole family, police said.
They had met them several times in Delhi and this was Anjali's third visit to Bhopal.
Police said that when Anjali had joined the IAF in Belgaum, Amit was her senior and they also worked together in Bangalore, Delhi and Jammu.
When Amit's wife came to know about this, she had obviously objected, the police added.
Anjali's brother in law Jitendra daid that the police should investigate why Anjali went to Amit's place, for what reason and was there any quarrel between the two.
He said that Amit did promise Anjali that he would marry her once he is separated from his wife.
The whole day on Monday, Amit was missing and had gone to the cantonment area in Bhopal.
Late in the evening, the police took him in custody and started interrogations.
Police have registered a case under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code against Amit Gupta and he would be quizzed by the senior police officials, Bhadoria said.
