Imphal, October 27 2013:
A visitors' house constructed anew at the Orchid Research and Development Centre, Hengbung with monetary assistance from Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Government of India was inaugurated yesterday.
The visitors' house was constructed to accommodate resource persons and scientists coming from outside the State for seminar, workshops and conferences about orchid gene conservation at the Orchid Research and Development Centre which is a wing of KVK Hengbung being hosted by the Foundation for Environment and Economic Services (FEEDS) .
For Manipur, KVK Hengbung is the first such centre which has a visitors' house of its own.
Speaking at the inaugural function as chief guest, SERB Secretary Prof TK Chandrasekhar said that SERB has been providing support in different areas to institutions like FEEDS.
The support thus extended by SERB would benefit people of rural areas.
Saying that cultivation and collection of orchids is no easy task, Prof Chandrasekhar lauded FEEDS for their tactful efforts to cultivate and collect orchids.
SERB has also been supporting scientists and the knowledge they generated is shared with other.
In his speech, guest of honour of the occasion Prof JM Laishram, Head of Department, Plant Breeding and Genetics, CAU Imphal said that orchids cultivated in Manipur can be exported at profitable prices.
However, people seem to have little intention to conserve and collect orchids.
SERB scientific advisor Dr HB Singh said that the visitors' house inaugurated yesterday was fit to accommodate scientists of national as well as international stature given the facilities available there.
Notably several varities of orchids are found in Manipur.
