Imphal, November 25:
A Bill was introduced in the RS today to convert the Manipur University into a Central University keeping in view the "huge imbalance" in educational facilities in the North Eastern region.
The Manipur University Bill 2005, piloted by Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, seeks to replace the Manipur University Ordinance 2005 promulgated last month for upgrading the University.
According to the statement of objects and reasons attached to the Bill, the MU, established in 1980, had not been able to develop necessary in-frastructure due to paucity of funds leading to large-scale migration of teachers, students & researchers outside the state.
The MU is surrounded by Central Universities at Kohima, Silchar, Tezpur, Aizawl and Shillong which provide better academic facilities because of Central Govt funding, it said.
A bomb blast took place at Chavangphai area near Moreh town at around 9.05 pm (Nov 25).There is no report of injury.
