Imphal, November 10 2020:
The State Cabinet today held a meeting and deliberated on holding the Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections at the earliest without further extending the term of office of the incumbent Members.
With Chief Minister N Biren in the chair, the Cabinet meeting started at 10 am in the conference hall of the Chief Minister's Secretariat.
The meeting agreed on holding the ADC elections at the earliest without further extending the term of the incumbent ADCs but no official decision was adopted.
The matter may be tabled at the next Cabinet meeting and the election schedule may be fixed at the meeting, informed a source.
Notably, the term of office of the six ADCs of Chandel, Churachandpur, Sadar Hills (Kangpokpi), Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul expired in May this year.
As per a recommendation of the Hill Areas Committee (HAC), the State Cabinet extended the ADCs' term for six months from June to November.
Even though as many as 50 agendas were prepared for today's Cabinet meeting, it was cut short as results of the by-polls started trickling in, added the source.
