Student found dead, SUK closes school hostel

Imphal, July 18 2019: A class VII student of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, Canchipur, under Singjamei PS, was found dead inside the hostel of the school today morning.

According to a reliable source, the deceased student identified as Ningthoujam Babysana (14) of Thangmeiband Maisnam Leikai, was found hung to death with a plastic wire from a double decker steel bed on the first floor of the school hostel at around 4.35 am today.

After necessary inquest of the body and the surrounding by forensic science laboratory experts with the help of Singjamei police, the body was later deposited at RIMS morgue.

On the other hand, the father of the girl Ningthoujam Tomchou, has alleged that his daughter's death reeks of foul play.

He narrated that his daughter has been staying at the hostel since Class IV and on July 14 (Sunday), he had dropped his daughter at the school after her summer vacation ended and his daughter did not show any signs out of the ordinary.

Tomchou continued that the family members received a phone call from a man from the school's side telling them to come to the school and on reaching the place, they found Babysana dead in a suspicious manner.

Pointing out the suspicious manner of the death, Tomchou alleged that his daughter was clenching her fists and her feet were all muddy even though she was reportedly found hanging from the double decker bed.

Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK) has also expressed suspicion in the mysterious death of the student at the school hostel and announced that SUK has closed down the hostel of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School effective immediately.

Speaking to media persons at SUK office today evening, its president Dhanakumar Ningthouja said that even though it is reported that Babysana was found hung to death in the hostel which she shared with 37 roommates, the position in which she was found (kneeling), muddy feet and missing flipflops/chappal as well as the failure of the school authorities and police to let family members and student unions enter the premise after hearing the news, make it seem like Babysana was killed and later hung from the bed.

As such, owing to all these suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the student, SUK has closed down the hostel with immediate effect, he announced and urged all the parents and guardians to collect their wards from the hostel tomorrow.

He then demanded the school authority and the Government to solve the case at the earliest and warned that SUK, along with the student community, will launch intense agitation.
