Imphal, May 17 2013 :
A meeting of Manipur University students held today has resolved to constitute Manipur University Students' Union Revival Demand Committee along and submit a memorandum to MU authorities for necessary action to revive the union within July 30 .
The meeting also decided to launch various forms of democratic movement in case its 16-point demand does not evoke positive response, said Committee convenor Kangujam Kanarjit while speaking to newspersons today at the varsity's Political Science Department lecture hall, where the meeting was also held.
Criticising MU authorities of disbanding the Union on flimsy ground some years back, he alleged that dissolution of the Union was intent on giving a free rein to the MU authorities and officials for indulging in corrupt activities.
Denouncing lack of seriousness on the part of the MU authorities to revive the Union even though all central universities have their respective student unions, Kanarjit also pointed out that owing to absence of the Union various problems and inconveniences besetting the students remain unaddressed.
The convenor also claimed not constituting Student Council as mentioned in Article 40 of University Act 2005 is violation of prescribed norms and a clear indication that MU authorities are unwilling to have a monitoring body that would otherwise expose malpractices.
Listing occupation of the erstwhile Union's Student Home by the students, interference in administrative works and boycott of class and examinations as integral part of the democratic movement, he also informed that a student delegation would call on the Union Minister of Human Resources Pallam Raju to highlight plight of the MU students.
Apart from revival of MUSU and conduct election, the 16-point charter of demand also include unlocking the three gates, opening 3-4 cash counters at A-Block and extending working hour of the counters till 3 pm, free access to MU students, open two transaction counters at the SBI branch exclusively for student customers, open ATM booth at the varsity campus, reopen indoor stadium of the Sports Department, prohibit entry of outsiders into the campus, scrap 'park at your risk' notices and station Home Guard personnel at the parking zones, clear pending scholarship entitlements, annul 'vehicle pass' to contractors, ensure punctuality of all faculty and staff members, make computers in the library functional along with internet facility, provide Wi-fi facility at the hostel, punitive action against teaching as well as non teaching staff involved in contract works and ban leasing out department equipment/tools to private parties.
