Imphal, May 17 2013 :
Although the State Government had taken up precautionary measures even to the extent of declaring holidays in all the educational institutions of the State, cyclone Mahasen failed to reach Manipur.
While talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Prof N Dev, Dean, School of Human and Environmental Sciences, stated that every storm which comes at an average speed of 61 km/hour is termed as normal cyclone.
The cyclone which comes at a speed of 115 km/hour is termed as a medium cyclone and the cyclone which comes at a speed of over 118 km/hour is described as strong cyclone and it can cause serious destruction to human life and property.
He informed that Mahasen which originated from Bay of Bengal is a normal cyclone that will not cause any harm to human life and property.
But none of us seem to be aware of this fact.

The impacts of the cyclone failed to reach Manipur because of various geographical factors.
Moreover, there is no specific equipment, particularly satellites, in the State to predict the impacts of cyclone beforehand.
The State Government could have taken the reports from the World Meteorological Organisation or the Indian Meteorological Department before taking any decisive move, he added.
Our Tamenglong correspondent adds: At the instruction of the District Administration, all educational institutes in Tamenglong district remained closed today.
A sense of anxiety also remained gripping the people since last night and they could only take a sigh of relief when the weather turned out to fine and sunny in the morning.
