All India Youth Federation organised an awareness programme on voluntary blood donation as part of the month-long celebration of birth anniversary of Jananeta Hijam Irabot today.
Among others, CPI State executive member Dr M Nara and JNIMS' Haematology HOD Dr Konsam Surjit attended the function.
Surjit said that there is still need to impart awarness on voluntary blood donation.
Only 30 per cent of the total population donate blood in the State although each and every member of the society need to donate blood, he said.
Saying that Tripura is leading in voluntary blood donation among NE States, Surjit said that 99 per cent of the people of Tripura including Chief Minister Manik Sarkar donate blood in Tripura.
He said that Manipur now has a State Blood Cell and a Nodal Officer has been appointed to look after the cell.
Any adult whose weight is above 45 kg and haemoglobin count is above 12.5 gm/decilitre may donate blood, he said.
There is no effect or loss to body due to blood donation, Surjit said.
