International Literacy Day celebrated

Like in other parts of the world, the 50th International Literacy Day was celebrated at GM Hall, Imphal organised by the Department of Adult Education and State Literacy Mission Authority.
The celebration began with the lighting of the 'literacy lamp' by chief guest Social Welfare and Co-operation Minister AK Mirabai.
Joint Secretary of Department of Adult Education Kholiya Loro, Chairperson of ADC and DLSS Senapati district ML Markson and Chairperson of ADC and DLSS Chandel district Lhukhosei Zou attended as the president and guests of honour of the celebration respectively.
Speaking at the occasion AK Mirabai highlighted the importance of educating a women.
She also stressed on the steps taken up by the Department of Adult Education to increase literacy rate and to bridge the literacy gap between men and women.
"Time has changed.
People have become more serious about educating the younger generation.
Still, there are a good number of people who are illiterate", the Minister said adding that it would be wise for each and every citizens of the State irrespective of caste or creed to understand the necessity of education and literacy.
"Without it, there can be no development and without development there can be no peace among us," Mirabai said.
She further asserted that the State Government through the Department of Adult Education will work to close the disparity in opportunities by providing education to people living in different parts of the State.
"The misconception that women should not be allowed formal education is a matter of the past.
It is high time for the policy makers to make higher literacy rate their main objectives", the Minister said.
She assured to approach the State Government and other concerned authorities and push for the provision of necessary support and removal of shortage of man-power in the Department of Adult Education.
Nodal Officer of the State Literacy Mission Authority A Romeo highlighted the various programmes conducted by the Department to bring the aged people among the literate group of the society.
Literacy rate of Manipur as per the 2011 census is 79.85 percent with 86.49 percent literacy rate for male and 73.17 percent literacy rate for women.
As part of the celebration, prizes were distributed for best MAEC/AECs/30 BPVTs/ CPNA to students of Adult Continuing Education and Extension (ACEE), Manipur University.
Various cultural programmes were also presented by learners and field functionaries of SB districts.
