Outreach programme held

A one day outreach programme to explain the transition and the laws and procedures related to normal export and import at Indo-Myanmar border was held today at Hotel Classic Grande.
The programme was organised by the Dept of Commerce and Industries, Govt of Manipur in collaboration with Dept of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Govt of India.
Speaking as the chief guest of the inaugural session, Govindas Konthoujam, Minister (Commerce and Industries), Govt of Manipur said that any transition takes its own time for settling down.
Likewise, doing away with the barter system of trade at Indo-Myanmar border with effect from Dec 1, 2015 and switching over completely to normal trade in any permitted currency in addition to the Asian Clearing Union Mechanism will take its own time.
Pointing out that a multi storied shopping complex at Moreh was recently inaugurated, the Minister said that the Govt is in the process of auctioning and allotment of shops so as to facilitate promotion of normal trade at Moreh.
Govindas further said that the State Cabinet had given its approval for acquisition of 500 acres of land at Kuraopokpi in Thoubal district which is on the proposed Asian Highway for setting up of multi-product special economic zone.
He also pointed out that jewellers' associations based at Mumbai had already submitted a proposal for setting up a jewellery park at Kuraopokpi.
The Govt is also in the process of acquiring 100 acres of land near Tera Urak in Bishnupur for setting up of SEZ keeping in view the closeness to Imphal Airport and also the proposed Air Cargo Terminal, he said.
He exuded great confidence that the Govt will be able to provide necessary facilitation for promotion of normal trade at India-Myanmar border more so to leverage the strategic location of Moreh on the AH No 1 and 2 and also as the gateway to the SE Asia.
The programme was attended amongst others by O Nabakishore, Chief Secretary, Manipur; VK Dewangan, Commissioner and Secretary (Commerce and Industries), Manipur; Ravi Capoor, Joint Secretary, Dept of Commerce, Govt of India.
