Imphal, July 24 2016:
Councillors of Lilong Nagar
Panchayat have alleged that
Langthabal AC MLA Karam
Shyam had verbally abused
them and his nephew and driver
manhandled them at Lilong
Chajing Mairenkhong today.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, Lilong Nagar
Panchayat Vice Chairperson Arambam Omila Devi said that they
along with a team of Singjamei police station went to Lilong
Chajing Mairengkhong to look into an alleged illegal construction
of an Anganwadi centre.
Even as they were enquiring the individuals concerned
whether they took permission from the Nagar Panchayat to
construct the Anganwadi centre on a public land, the MLA
came there and verbally abused them.
Moreover, MLA's nephew and driver manhandled some of
the Councillors in full public view, she said.
Saying that it is unbecoming on the part of a lawmaker to
take the law in his hand, Omila strongly condemned the action
of the MLA and his supporters.
She said that Lilong Nagar Panchayat is a local body
elected by the people of the area under Manipur Municipality
Act, 1994.
As such, any agency which intends to construct anything
within the boundary of the Nagar Panchayat needs to take
prior permission from the Councillor concerned, she said.
However, in this case, no permission has been sought from
any of the Councillor of the Nagar Panchayat, she said.
Omila also observed that DC is not the authority to give
permission to build any structure on the public land which
falls within the boundary of a Nagar Panchayat.
She also urged the authority concerned to look into the
matter seriously.
