Imphal, September 16:
Taking cognizance of the memorandum submitted by the Zomi Human Rights Foundation (ZHRF), Lamka to the National Commission for SC/ST, New Delhi on the physical assault of Rev Letthang and his family inside their own compound at Rajghat, Tripura earlier this year, the Commission's Agartala Office, has issued notice to the Tripura Government requesting it to conduct a thorough probe on the case and submit its report to the Commission within one month.
The memorandum was submitted way back on June 3, 2004.In the letter addressed to the Secretary (Home) of the Tripura Government, Dr SK Naskar, Deputy Director of the Commission, stated that there is prima facie, evidence that "a brutal force was applied to Rev Letthang and family by unidentified miscreants with ulterior motives.
In view of the seriousness of this heinous criminal act, it is requested that a thorough probe may-please be conducted by the state police intelligence branch and to arrest the criminals responsible for such inhuman murderous act".
It may be mentioned that Rev Letthang, his wife and two children, who are doing missionary works in Tripura had survived the attack but suffered grievous injuries in the attack.
The ZHRF in the memorandum had alleged that there is a systematic attempt to intimidate and attack the little Christian minority living in the state and said that it is not the first time such a planned attack was made on the Christian population.
In the meanwhile, the ZHRF in a press release yesterday said that the Foundation (Headquarter) and its Delhi Cell had submitted separate representations to the Union Home Minister asking for the review of the AFSPA in view of its many abuses from the entire north eastern states of India and the protection of tribal rights in the hill district of Manipur especially in Churachandpur district and restoration of civil administration which is non-functional since along time due to the underground elements.
