Showing his dissatisfaction over the progress of schemes being implemented in Manipur under Social Welfare Department, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik stressed on the need to expedite work progress.
After arriving here this morning, the Union Minister held a meeting with officials of Social Welfare Department at Hotel Classic during which schemes particularly those meant for differently abled persons were reviewed at length.
Later speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan, Mukul Wasnik said that he could observe certain area of weakness and flaws in the way Social Welfare Department is implementing different schemes.
To make up these weaknesses and rectify the flaws, there is a need to work in a more intensive manner.
He also stated that all the schemes should be implemented strictly in accordance with the guidelines laid down.
To ensure greater compatibility between the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Disabled Act passed by the Parliament in 1995, a committee has been constituted to amend the Disabled Act, Mukul Wasnik stated.
A report submitted by the committee is being studied by a coordination committee of the Centre.
After studying the report, the Ministry would consult with the State Governments and see if the two Acts could be made more compatible to each other.
To a specific query if he is satisfied with the way Social Welfare Department is implementing different schemes in the State, Mukul Wasnik stated that the department needs to work harder and implement the schemes in a more transparent and efficient manner so as to ensure that benefits of these schemes reach the people.
He also underscored the need to enhance capacity building by creating awareness among the mass about the schemes through seminars and workshops.
Union Minister Mukul Wasnik will interact with NGOs and officials working under Social Welfare Department about disabled persons, drug abuse and old age pension tomorrow before leaving Imphal.
